Mike Piazza's Mets Jersey Makes First Appearance At 9/11 Memorial Museum

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets jersey Mike Piazza wore when he hit the legendary game-winning home run in the team's first home game since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks is finally home.

The jersey, whose sale caused an uproar, made its only appearance in the open at the 9/11 Memorial Museum Monday, CBS2's Steve Overmyer.

The jersey was originally up for auction until April 30, but the seller feared the new owner wouldn't display it.

Overymyer reported the owner feared the iconic Piazza jersey could've ended up on foreign soil.

Some local business leaders bought the jersey for a record $365,000 and took ownership Monday morning.

One of the new homes will be the museum.

"We have a tremendous amount of content that goes through the pain of that day, but some of our most special content is showing people coming together," Joe Daniels, the museum's president, said. "There's certain artifacts that remember that feeling of unity and the Piazza jersey is certainly one of them."

The jersey is on its way to the Baseball Hall of Fame to be sealed in a case. It will rotate from Cooperstown, Citi Field and the museum.

The schedule of where the jersey is going to be has not yet been released, but it will be at Citi Field when the Mets retire Piazza's number.

The buyers are Anthony Scaramucci, Tony Lauto and an anonymous third business partner, all Mets fans. Scaramucci is the founder of Skybridge Capital and host of the Fox Business Network's "Wall Street Week," and Lauto is a former head trader at Goldman Sachs. The three partners also own a small slice of the Mets.
