3 Men Shot As Groups Clash Outside Manhattan Recording Studio
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bullets flew outside of a Midtown, Manhattan recording studio on Tuesday night during an altercation between two opposing groups.
Three people were shot -- the youngest just 19 years old -- and surveillance video shows the chaos unfold, CBS2's Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported.
Video shows a small group approaching a silver car on West 38th Street near Sixth Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. Suddenly, two people emerge from a car stopped behind a white SUV and approach the group.
As shots ring out, everyone takes off in different directions, including the stopped car, which heads toward Fifth Avenue.
Within seconds, police officers already in the area arrived on the scene.
"I heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop at about quarter to 11, looked out the window and saw people running," Midtown resident Michael Goodman said.
The victims, ages 19, 24 and 27, were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition.
Police said there was a party at a recording studio that was advertised on social media and then two rival groups from Brooklyn clashed out in the street.
Authorities said both sides were armed. Four guns were recovered, including one believed to be a "ghost gun," making it untraceable.
Bullets shattered the glass of the silver car, pierced the front window of a business twice, and even hit the frame of a hardware store.
"We don't need that type of violence in our city," resident Muhammad Milhouse told CBS2's John Dias. "The type of thing that's happening out here right now, being that we're coming out of the COVID pandemic, we should be more unified as a nation and especially as a city. We've got more important things to be thinking about -- our health and our lives."
Officers were keeping guard outside of the recording studio on Wednesday.
"This morning, this was closed off, and then across the street from where I work they still have yellow tape up there," Will Corchado said.
"Here in Midtown, because of Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue, there's generally a police presence," Goodman added.
The NYPD said it is questioning both victims and suspects, including a 17-year-old believed to be the gunman who was uninjured and arrested at the scene.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the shootout.
Police said the 17-year-old being questioned has a prior shooting conviction when he was 14.
So far, no charges have been filed in the incident.
