Police Sources: Midtown Fortune Teller Accused Of Defrauding Woman Out Of Nearly $1,000

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Midtown fortune teller apparently did not see an arrest in her future, but sources told CBS2 that was exactly what happened.

Christine Evans, 47, was arrested on Tuesday on charges of fortune telling, grand larceny, and scheme to defraud.

Evans worked as a fortune teller in a storefront at 253 W. 43rd St. between Seventh and Eighth avenues, police sources told CBS2.

A 22-year-old Manhattan woman allegedly came to see Evans on three occasions, and Evans allegedly told the woman she had a "curse" on her family and she needed $300 to lift the curse, sources said.

The woman allegedly paid Evans with a $300 gift card, sources said.

In two subsequent visits, the victim paid another $500 in gift cards to have the "curse" lifted, sources said.

On April 14, the victim returned in an effort to get her money back, and Evans refused to refund the money, sources said. The victim reported the crime to the NYPD at the Midtown South Precinct, sources said.

Police arrested Evans on Sunday, sources said.

Evans has one prior arrest in New York City, sources said. In 2012, she was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child less than 7-years-old in an incident unrelated to fortune telling, sources said.
