Golf Channel's Michael Breed On WFAN: Keep Eye On Rose, McIlroy At Players Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (WFAN) -- Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy are two players to watch as The Players Championship gets underway Thursday at TPC Sawgrass, golf analyst Michael Breed said.

"Both of them played well at the Wells Fargo last week," the Golf Channel commentator told WFAN's Mike Francesa on Wednesday. "Rose finished third. McIlroy finished fourth. They both have great numbers. (But) what you see out of both of them is they're struggling with the putter. That, to me, is the curveball. You don't know how they're going to do with that putter."

While The Players Championship is often referred to as the unofficial "fifth major," Breed said he doesn't believe players hold it in such high regard, especially not this year.

"There's a lot of things going on this year," he said. "You've got Olympics. You've got Ryder Cup. You've got a lot of things. There's a lot of emotional highs and lows, and I think with the season getting sandwiched -- the PGA Championship is going to be only three weeks behind the Open Championship -- and I think when it's all said and done, this June/July time frame is going to be a lot of golf. And I think these guys are kind of just getting ready for the U.S. Open."
