Mets' Cespedes Leaves Game 5 After Fouling Pitch Off His Kneecap

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It looked awfully painful.

Mets' slugger Yoenis Cespedes was forced to leave Game 5 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday night after fouling a pitch off his left kneecap during the sixth inning.

Cespedes, who largely struggled during the Fall Classic, was facing the Royals' Edinson Volquez with the bases loaded and no one out and the Mets' clinging to a 1-0 lead when his powerful swing sent him down in a heap on top of home plate.

After being attended to by trainers, Cespedes stayed in the game, but popped out weakly in the infield two pitches later and was visibly hobbling as he ran down first base.

Juan Lagares replaced Cespedes in the outfield to start the seventh inning.

Cespedes immediately went for X-rays, which revealed no breaks.

The Mets went on to score one run in the frame and carried a 2-0 lead into the ninth, before the Royals finally solved Matt Harvey and tied the game. Kansas City then put New York away in the 12th on its way to a 7-2 win and first world championship since 1985.
