Carton: St. John's Rejects Mets' Demands For Mullin 1st Pitch

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- WFAN co-host Craig Carton says the New York Mets wanted St. John's head coach Chris Mullin to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field -- with some strings attached.

According to Carton, the Mets were rebuffed when they asked the school to buy 5,000 tickets in exchange for Mullin doing the honors.

The team "retracted the demand" and then requested that Mullin throw out the first pitch the day before he's scheduled to take the mound in the Bronx, which was also denied, according to Carton.

"Are you that desperate?" Carton said. "Listen, if you want to start selling the first pitch, open it up to everybody!"

Carton referenced what he called "obnoxious" and "minor league crap" several times during Monday's show.

"If it's accurate ... that is the most absurd and ridiculous thing I have ever heard," co-host Boomer Esiason said.

Mullin, a local hoops legend, is scheduled to throw the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on May 27. He'll do the same at Citi Field later this year, Carton said.

Mullin will also appear at Yankee Stadium on June 3 for Boomer & Carton's "True Blue" celebrity softball game to honor and remember members of the NYPD.

The 51-year-old was hired to lead the Red Storm earlier this year.
