Heyman: Justin Upton, Carlos Gomez Are On Mets' Radar

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets have the pitching.

Now they need some offense to complement it.

It's unclear when -- or if -- third baseman David Wright will return this season, and catcher Travis d'Arnaud doesn't appear close to being activated from the disabled list.

So as the second half gets underway, general manager Sandy Alderson has to decide if he wants to go for it and add a bat or two before the July 31 trade deadline.

According to CBSSports.com/WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, left fielder Justin Upton and center fielder Carlos Gomez are on the Mets' radar.

Both players would help New York's lineup immensely.

Upton, currently on the Padres, is batting .253 with 14 home runs and 48 RBIs. He's also stolen 17 bases. The 27-year-old will be a free agent after the season.

Gomez, 29, broke into the majors with the Mets. The Brewers' former Gold Glover is hitting .273 with eight homers and 41 RBIs.

Speaking of the Brewers, Heyman reports that the Mets are only interested in pursuing third baseman Aramis Ramírez if they receive more bad news about Wright's condition. Shortstop Jean Segura, Heyman reports, is more of a fallback option for Alderson at this time.

The Mets' big four starting pitchers -- Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz -- are untouchable, according to Heyman.

New York is right in the thick of things, sitting two games behind the first-place Nationals in the National League East and one game behind the Cubs for the second NL wild-card berth.
