Metro-North Train Hits Tree On Tracks In Bethel, Conn.

BETHEL, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- It was a rough ride Thursday night from some Metro-North New Haven Line passengers, when a northbound train slammed into a tree that had fallen onto the tracks.

The train hit the tree shortly before 9 p.m. in Bethel, Connecticut – between the Reading and Bethel stations on the Danbury branch of the line, officials said.

Passengers waited about an hour for a crew to remove the tree. A total of 35 people were eventually transferred to another train while the disabled train was inspected, officials told 1010 WINS.

There were no reported injuries, and no residual damage to the tracks.

For a time after the tree fell, New Haven Line eastbound trains were not stopping at Rye, Port Chester, Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside or Old Greenwich. Service was back to normal by 10:20 p.m.

The tree came down as severe thunderstorms were pounding the area for a second night in a row.
