Metro-North: Woman Killed By Train At Cos Cob Station Was Retrieving Dropped Purse

GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities have shed more light on the events that led up to a Connecticut woman being fatally struck by a train at a Metro-North Rail Road station.

Metro-North spokesman Salvatore Arena said Tamar A. Louis was sitting on the platform Friday at the Cos Cob station in Greenwich dangling her legs over the edge.

Arena said on Saturday that the approaching train's engineer had seen Louis, blasted the horn and tried to slow the train down.

The noise startled Louis, who was just one day shy of her 29th birthday, prompting her to drop her purse.

Arena said Louis went onto the tracks to get it and was struck and killed instantly.

He said the New Haven-bound train was an express that had not been scheduled to stop at Cos Cob.

Rail service was delayed by 30 to 40 minutes. Passengers were transferred to another train.
