Meningitis Case Detected At Rutgers University-New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A student at Rutgers University-New Brunswick has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, school officials said Tuesday.

The student was hospitalized on April 29 and is recovering, officials said.

The school has reached out to students who have had close contact with the ill student to get them started on antibiotics.

The precise strain of meningitis hasn't yet been determined, but officials are checking to see if it is linked to another case from March.

Meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and can cause high fever, headache, a stiff neck and a rash.

Students concerned about possible exposure or who are exhibiting possible symptoms are asked to visit the campus' health center.
