Menendez Defiant Amid Reports Of Looming Indictment
GARWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez is reiterating he has done nothing wrong amid reports that he could soon be indicted on corruption charges.
The New Jersey Democrat spoke to reporters Monday at a factory where he was touting new legislation aimed at hiring military veterans.
Federal prosecutors have reportedly been looking into whether Menendez accepted pricey gifts from a longtime friend and ophthalmologist in Florida in exchange for his influence on a couple of issues, including a Medicare billing dispute.
A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press this month that criminal charges were expected to be filed in coming weeks. Some reports have said that may happen this week.
"I have always acted appropriately and legally," Menendez said Monday, almost repeating verbatim his denial earlier this month.
Menendez continued, saying he is passionate about the things he has advocated for.
"We will respond to any issues, any inquiries, any allegations when and if the time comes," Menendez told reporters, including 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet.
He also said leaks about a possible indictment are in violation of the law and should be prosecuted.
"You have to wonder when there is a violation of the law and no one seems to be obsessed with the question of that violation of the law," he told reporters, including WCBS 880's Alex Silverman.
