Men Accused Of Stealing $3,000 In Baby Formula Nabbed Following Mahwah Police Chase

MAHWAH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Three New York City men have been arrested in Bergen County, N.J. for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of baby formula.

As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, there's apparently a black market for anything, including baby formula.

The suspects, from Queens and Brooklyn, went into the A&P market in Mahwah Wednesday night, loaded the cart with the pricey formula and tried to race out with the stolen goods, police said.

"Their scam was they just take the shopping cart and they filled it up with Enfamil, baby formula," Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli told Adams. "There's really no way that law enforcement can track these items, so it's a very profitable scheme for them."

According to police, the suspects planned to sell the expensive formula in bodegas back in the city.

"As they walked out of the store with it without paying, one of the store employees confronted them in the parking lot and there was a brief altercation where they assaulted the employee," said Batelli.

The suspects fled in a car, leading police on a chase down Route 17. The getaway car crashed into a tree while trying to exit in Ho-Ho-Kus.

Officers caught one suspect with the car and the stolen formula. That suspect was identified by police as Jovan Milton Alleyne, 18, of Rosedale, Queens.

Police canines tracked down the other two suspects at the train station. They were identified as Marvin Guillaume-Sam, 22, also of Rosedale, and Linson Watson, 22, of Brooklyn.

"Fortunately, in this incident, they were apprehended only a short distance away and now face robbery charges because of the assault that occurred in the parking lot after the shoplifting," said Batelli.

The store employee who was punched in the face was taken to the hospital to be treated, police said.
