'Shame On YG,' Rapper's Song 'Meet The Flockers' Sparks Irving Plaza Protest

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A music video and song have sparked outrage across the country.

As CBS2's Jessica Layton reported, for some it's particularly personal.

"We live in Flushing, Queens, and we had our house broken into twice in the last five years," Chris Kwoak said.

Kwoak said he can't help but feel that the song "Meet The Flockers" by rapper YG glamorizes crimes against his own community.

That's because of lyrics that allude to scouting out and breaking into the homes of Asian Americans.

The song has prompted protests in major cities where YG performs -- including one outside of Irving Plaza on a Monday night.

"Shame on YG. Shame on YG," protesters shouted.

The other side of the story comes from the other side of the street. YG fans said they don't want to tell protesters how to feel, but believe the lyrics have been misunderstood.

"I feel like YG just talk about what he's already gone through. He's not saying go out and do this," Kashira said.

"I think that's just how he grew up," another fan added.

But Asian Americans in Union Square said there's no mistaking the message, and promised that as YG continues to tour, the demonstrations will follow, until the song is banned or they get an apology.

The song was released in 2014. Its recent spike in popularity was reportedly sparked by an incident in Georgia last month when a Chinese-American woman shot three intruders who entered her home, killing one of them.
