Plan Under Way To Turn Meadowlands Into Destination For Many More Events
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Big plans are afoot for developing the Meadowlands into a major destination.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, there are no big marketing dollars on the way to lure main events to the Meadowlands.
"But having said that, we need to build upon the success of attracting a Super Bowl here; having WrestleMania here," said New Jersey Sports Authority President Wayne Hasenbalg.
Hasenbalg said bidding is under way for more events to come.
"Look, I think the Meadowlands has always been a destination," he said.
The American Dream shopping and entertainment complex will be coming in a couple of years – mixing in with MetLife Stadium, the horse track, and the sports book.
"It's about going after events and getting events here, but it's also about creating more of an identity of what the Meadowlands is," Hasenbalg said.
Hasenbalg said there will be a role in the new Meadowlands identity for the now-shuttered IZOD Center.
"Look at that asset and where it sits," he said. "It's in the middle of all the action we're talking about."
Hasenbalg said given the events the Meadowlands has hosted, it can be expected to sell itself.
