Mayor De Blasio's Pizza Fork To Be Auctioned Off For Charity
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The fork behind Mayor Bill de Blasio's so-called "Pizzagate" scandal will be auctioned off for charity.
The Internet exploded last Friday after the Boston-born mayor ate three slices of pizza using a knife and fork during a stop at Goodfella's Pizzeria on Staten Island.
After the infamous incident, Marc Cosentino, a retired New York City police sergeant and co-owner of the eatery, bagged the silverware and put it on display for everyone to see.
Now, he plans to auction off the fork for charity.
"He [de Blasio] made a lot of promises to help the community and also with the Sandy relief," co-owner Scot Cosentino told 1010 WINS. "We're going to do a little auction and charity function to raise money to start the ball rolling out here."
The mayor defended his knife-and-fork technique, saying, "In my ancestral homeland, it is more typical to eat with a fork and knife. And so, I have been in Italy a lot and I picked up the habit for certain types of pizza. So when you have a pizza like this, it had a lot on it, I often start with a knife and fork but then I cross over to the American approach."
During last week's incident, de Blasio switched to eating by hand when he got to his fourth slice.
Scot Cosentino said they created a slogan for the scandal, "Either you fork or you New York, one or the other."
