Mayor De Blasio's Kids Named King And Queen Of Coney Island's Mermaid Parade
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio's kids have been crowned king and queen of this year's Mermaid Parade in Coney Island.
Dante de Blasio has been named King Neptune while his sister, Chiara, will serve as Queen Mermaid.
"They represent the next generation of New Yorkers," Coney Island USA founder Dick Zigun, who is known as the Mayor of Coney Island, told 1010 WINS. "They represent Coney Island's target audience."
According to tradition, the de Blasio kids will travel the parade route in an antique wicker rolling chair that dates back to 1923.
"I think they're going to have a lot of fun," Zigun said.

Previous King Neptunes and Queen Mermaids have included Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Queen Latifah, Judah Friedlander, Carole Radziwill, Harvey Keitel and Dapne Keitel.
The 32nd Annual Mermaid Parade will take place June 21 along Surf Avenue.
It features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costumes of mermaids, sea creatures and more.
The event is meant to be a celebration of the sand, the sea, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression.
It is the largest art parade in the nation.
