De Blasio, Family Heading West This Week For Vacation

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and his family are taking a vacation.

City officials said Monday that the mayor's family will be spending eight days traveling together throughout the southwestern and western United States.

De Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray and their two college-age children will be leaving Tuesday night.

They'll return July 8. City officials did not release a specific itinerary but said the press office will provide updates each day about the mayor's travels.

De Blasio will have daily check-in calls with senior administration officials during the trip. First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris will handle the city's day-to-day operations in de Blasio's absence.

The trip comes at the end of a tough stretch for de Blasio. He is widely viewed as having caved on hiring new police officers in the city budget and did not accomplish much of his agenda in Albany.

Last summer, the family vacationed in Italy.

In March, de Blasio and McCray took a getaway to Puerto Rico.
