Reports: Red Bulls Defender, NJ Native Matt Miazga Could Join Chelsea FC This Week

HARRISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- U.S. national team and New York Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga appears to be on the verge of joining Chelsea FC of the Premier League.

A source told ESPN the rights to Miazga, a native of Clifton, New Jersey, are expected to be sold to Chelsea on Wednesday or Thursday.

Miazga, 20, has less than a year remaining on his Red Bulls contract and reportedly rejected an offer for an extension last month, putting the team in a position where it had to deal him or risk letting him walk after the 2016 season without receiving any compensation.

The Daily Mail reported the transfer fee is expected to be about $5 million.

Miazga has already left for England, where he will undergo a physical before joining his new team, reports said. He had been in camp with the senior national team.

SI.com reported Wednesday that Chelsea will not immediately loan Miazga to other teams, like it often does with players it owns. Instead, he is expected to remain with the senior team for the last four months of this season, and his performance will then be re-evaluated in the offseason.
