Massapequa Residents Back In Their Homes Following Massive Fuel Truck Fire

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Residents of a Long Island neighborhood were back in their homes on Sunday night, after a massive fuel truck fire forced evacuations.

A heating oil truck burst into flames on Merrick Road in Massapequa shortly after 10:30 a.m., CBS 2 reported.

The driver reportedly heard a loud bang and saw flames through his rear-view mirror.

The inferno brought out more than 100 firefighters from four communities. At least two churches were preparing to hold Sunday services and also had to be evacuated.

"I think we were just worried about the truck exploding which is why the church was evacuated," one neighbor said.

Nassau County Police said the truck contained nearly a full load, 3,000 gallons, of heating oil.
