MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Nassau County SPCA is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction after several chickens were found mutilated in Massapequa Preserve.

The discovery was made by a passerby around 4 p.m. Friday.

Nassau County SPCA Chief Gary Rogers said this could have been part of a ritual because candles and a yellow bandana were found nailed to a tree.

"We're seeing more of these crimes occur, apparently from what we've been told and the information we have, it appears to be some kind of religious or Santeria event," Rogers told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "The problem is that these animals suffer when they are being killed like that and mutilated."

One chicken was found alive and is being cared for by a local vet.
