Masquerade, Community Take Center Stage During Jewish Holiday Of Purim

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It was all about masquerade and community this weekend as the lively Jewish holiday of Purim got underway.

Kids and parents donned costumes at a Lower East Side party on Sunday.

The holiday celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian empire.

"It's like wearing princessy, batman, superheroes all you want, go to a whole big party," one reveler said.

"There are also obligations that people have on this holiday towards their community," Joanna Samuels, Executive Director, Manny Cantor Center, explained.

The festival's proceeds will benefit the Educational Alliance Early Childhood Center.
