N.J. Man Charged With Alleged Sexual Assault Of Student At Manhattan College

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Wyckoff, New Jersey man surrendered to police Tuesday, on allegations that he sexually assaulted a student on the Manhattan College campus.

Around noon, Kevin Convery, 18, surrendered with his attorney to detectives from the NYPD Bronx Special Victims Unit. He was charged with rape, sexual misconduct and sex abuse, police said.

He was charged with rape, sexual misconduct and sex abuse in connection with an incident at Manhattan College – in the Riverdale section of the Bronx – on April 25, police said.

Sources said Convery is not a student at the college, but the 19-year-old victim is. Convery allegedly met the woman at a concert in the college gym and was invited back to her dorm room the night they met, police sources told CBS2.

The pair engaged in consensual kissing, but when it turned sexual, the woman said she did not want to engage in sexual relations, sources said.

A criminal complaint alleged that the woman repeatedly told Convery, "I do not want to have sex," but alleged he initiated intercourse with her anyway. At that point, the victim allegedly told Convery, "I told you no," and pushed him away.

There was no violence involved and neither was intoxicated, sources said.

Manhattan College released the following statement in the wake of the arrest: "The incident was reported to the college the day it occurred. The college provided immediate assistance to the student who made the report and provided assistance to the student's family. Our immediate concern in such instances is the health and safety of the student and we continue to cooperate fully with the New York Police Department."

Convery was arraigned and released on a recognizance bond Tuesday night, according to the Bronx District Attorney's office.
