NYC Man Wearing Suit Made Of Trash To Raise Recycling Awareness

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Rob Greenfield is known as the garbage man and he's proud of it.

The environmentalist walks the streets of New York City in a suit made of trash in an effort to draw attention to the need to recycle.

"Trash is out of sight, out of mind for almost everyone here," Greenfield told 1010 WINS. "The idea is to put it front and center, and get people to think about how much trash we create and talk about solutions."

Greenfield is on a 30-day mission to wear every single piece of trash he creates.

He said the average person creates 4.5 pounds of trash a day.

"In reality, I'm creating about 3 pounds a day, so I'm not quite keeping up with what the average person does," he said.

Greenfield had a suit specially made to hold his garbage.

"Four and a half pounds adds up to 135 pounds by the end of the month, so I had to be able to actually move around still," Greenfield said. "I had a suit designed that has a backpack built into it so the weight is distributed."

Greenfield has been documenting the project on Instagram.

"I'm amazed at how effortless it has been to create this much trash and can't even imagine what I'll look like in a few weeks!" Greenfield wrote on day three.

By day 13, he was up to 39 pounds of trash.

Greenfield chose to stick to non-perishable items after the smell of organic waste became unbearable, the New York Post reported.
