Police: Man Posed As Wounded War Vet In Scam For BMW Lease
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Manhattan man is accused of posing as a wounded military veteran as part of a scam to lease a car.
On Dec. 30, authorities said the NYPD was tipped off to a 2016 BMW X3 that was fraudulently leased and sitting in a parking garage on South William Street.
Following an investigation, police said it was determined the driver, identified as 42-year-old Jeremy Wilson, had faked being a wounded war veteran in an effort to lease the vehicle near the Boston area.
Officers seized the BMW and left a note for Wilson to call a detective.
On Monday, after arranging an opportunity for Wilson to appear at the 10th Precinct station house under the pretense that he might get his car back, police said they arrested him on grand larceny and other charges.
During a search warrant of Wilson's home, investigators discovered military uniforms, Harvard and MIT hats and coffee mugs, computers, cash and passports.
Wilson is charged with two counts of grand larceny, possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a forged instrument.
