Retired NYPD Officer Killed When Jeep Overturns, Catches Fire On Long Island

BAYPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A 49-year-old retired NYPD Officer was killed when his Jeep overturned and caught fire on Long Island Sunday.

Retired Officer Michael Schuierer was driving east on Sunrise Service Road in Bayport when he lost control of the vehicle at 12:15 p.m., Suffolk County police say.

They say the Jeep overturned and caught on fire.

Police say two bystanders tried to extricate Schuierer from the vehicle but were overwhelmed by the flames.

Schuierer, of East Patchogue, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An outpouring of prayers and messages were posted to his Facebook page.
