Man Killed While Changing Tire On Van Wyck Expressway Near JFK Airport

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man who was changing his tire on the Van Wyck Expressway was killed by a minivan Sunday morning, police said.

The man's vehicle became disabled just after 4 a.m., when he tried to change the tire in the left lane of the roadway, about a half-mile from Kennedy Airport's Terminal 1, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

A passenger inside the vehicle with the flat tire was injured, as well as three others in the minivan, CBS 2 reported. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Port Authority police immediately shut down the highway, creating massive traffic delays of several hours into the airport, Schuck reported.

The identity of the man who was killed has not been released.
