Man Killed, 40 People Displaced By Newark Apartment Building Fire

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A fire at a Newark apartment building Saturday left one man dead and about 40 other people displaced.

Earl Johnson, 83, died in the fire at the Pavilion Apartments in Newark, said Essex County prosecutors. The blaze started around 1:30 p.m in his 12th-floor unit, but the cause of the blaze remained under investigation Sunday.

Johnson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. No other injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to Johnson's apartment, but at least 16 other apartments had smoke and/or water damage, authorities said. Most of the residents displaced by the fire were expected to return home sometime Sunday.
