Owner Found Shot To Death In Back Of Newark Variety Store

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police were investigating Friday afternoon after the owner of a store was found shot to death in the back his business in Newark.

Police said the man's body was found Friday afternoon in the back of the Level's Variety Store, at 850 S. Orange Ave. in Newark, Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a homicide investigation was under way late Friday afternoon, according to police and the Essex County Prosecutor's office.

The man was identified as Michael T. Jones, 33, police said. Authorities confirmed Friday night that he owned the store.

Police as of 5 p.m. were collecting bags of evidence at the scene, and were seen towing a car that had been parked in front of the store.

There were no arrests in the case as of early Friday evening.
