Man Gets Life In Prison In Fatal 2010 Seton Hall Party Shooting
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man convicted of killing one student and wounding four others at an off-campus party near Seton Hall University has been sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.
At his sentencing Friday in Newark, Nicholas Welch apologized to the family of 19-year-old sophomore Jessica Moore but said the shooting wasn't his fault.
On Sept. 25, 2010, prosecutors said Welch was thrown out of the off-campus fraternity party at the Phi Beta Sigma house on Clinton Street in East Orange. He then went to a nearby friend's home, picked up a gun, came back, and opened fire on the party filled with about 100 Seton Hall students, prosecutors said.
Moore, an honor student from Disputanta, Va., was wounded in the head and died later in the day. Four other people were wounded.
In March, an Essex County jury convicted Welch of murder, attempted murder and other charges after a five-week trial. He was acquitted of hindering apprehension.
Under terms of his sentence he will be eligible for parole in about 89 years.
