FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was killed early Saturday when he fell off the trunk of a moving vehicle on Long Island.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, Rafael Acosta-Lemus, 21, of Patchogue and another person were attempting what they thought was an innocent stunt, outside a hookah bar at 10-75 Portion Rd. in Farmingville.

"(They) asked a friend who was driving a car if they could sit on the trunk lid of his car, and if he could drive them a very short distance slowly across that lot to their car," said Suffolk County police Detective Sgt. Michael Fitzharris.

Fitzharris said around 1:40 a.m., Acosta-Lemus slipped off the truck and hit his head on the pavement. He was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Fitzharris said it all amounted to a sad reminder that riding on the outside of any vehicle is dangerous.

"We don't believe that any criminal charges will be pending," he said.

The investigation into the incident continued Saturday evening. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident was asked to call the Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad at (631) 854-8562, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 220-TIPS.
