Man Dead After Explosion In Kew Gardens, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 70-year-old man died Monday in an explosion at a home in Kew Gardens, Queens.

Police confirmed Monday night that the man's death was a suicide.

The explosion happened in a second-floor residence above Austin's Ale House, on Austin Street near Lefferts Boulevard in Queens, the FDNY EMS said. Paramedics responded to the scene around 6:30 p.m.

Once at the scene, paramedics found the man in cardiac arrest. He died a short time later, officials said.

Police said the man might have used a firework or homemade explosive to trigger the blast.

Officials said there was no evidence of danger to any surrounding homes or people.

There were no other explosives found in the home.
