Man Charged In Coney Island Shooting That Wounded 2, Including 10-Year-Old Boy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect was charged late Wednesday in connection with a shooting left that two people – including a 10-year-old boy -- wounded in Coney Island, Brooklyn this past weekend.

Samuel Navarez, 31, of Brooklyn, was charged late Wednesday with two counts of attempted murder, police said.

The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Saturday on Mermaid Avenue near 23rd Street in Brooklyn, police said.

A 10-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after a bullet struck him above the right knee. A 25-year-old man was also wounded in the abdomen by a bullet.

Both victims were taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where their conditions were reported as stable.

Police earlier said they were looking at two suspects in the shooting.

The shooting was one of many in a weekend that was rife with gun violence in all five boroughs in New York City. In all, there were five shootings in Manhattan, five in the Bronx, nine in Brooklyn, one on Staten Island and one in Queens.
