Man And Woman Wounded When Shots Are Fired Outside Of Harlem Supermarket
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were investigating a shooting that took place in front of a grocery store in Harlem on Monday night.
Mildred Mahazu, 76, suffered a graze wound to the neck as she was exiting the Key Food on Lenox Avenue, between 139th and 140th streets, around 7:30 p.m.
Store employees said Mahazu is a regular who shops at the store at least four times a week. Police do not believe she was the intended target.
Francis Norman, 51, was standing nearby and was also hit in the abdomen and the buttocks, police said.
Both victims were taken to Harlem Hospital Center. Neither victim's injuries were believed to be life threatening, but Norman was in serious condition, according to authorities.
Mark Becks lives nearby and heard the gunshots.
"It's crazy. It's ridiculous. I mean this is supposed to be a good neighborhood, we should be able to walk down the street and not have to worry about seeing anything or hearing anything," he told CBS2's Valerie Castro.
Police have focused their investigation on the west side of Lenox Avenue, where several bullet casings were found on the ground.
Across the street a bus was left with a damaged windshield, the supermarket had several bullet holes in the windows.
No weapon was recovered, and it was unclear who the gunman was targeting, police said.
Police were also investigating a shooting in the same location on Sunday.
A man was shot around 4 p.m. and taken to Harlem Hospital Center in serious condition. His wounds were not believed to be life threatening.
