Main Break Spews Water, Ties Up Traffic In North Brunswick

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A water main break created a geyser Thursday afternoon in North Brunswick.

The 30-inch water main under Ryders Lane burst open, eating away some of the roadway as water gushed out, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

There were also reports that the water hurled rocks at passing cars, CBS 2 reported.

The line that broke open supplies East Brunswick.

"I was told by the people in the field that it was quite the event to see the water flowing out of 30 inches, of water coming down the roadway," Austin Kosik, East Brunswick's emergency management coordinator, told Smith.

The break clogged traffic as responders shut down Ryders Lane to move in heavy machinery to work on repairs.

Kosik said East Brunswick was not without water, although residents were asked to conserve, and a boil water advisory has been issued.

"We have an ample water supply for safety and fire protection and for people's consumption," Kosik said.

Workers are still trying to determine what caused the main, which dates back to the 1950s, to rupture.
