1 Hurt When 2 Manholes Explode In Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Two manholes exploded Thursday evening in Lower Manhattan, sending one person to a hospital.

The first cover blew around 4:30 p.m. on Nassau Street between Liberty Street and Maiden Lane. A short time later, a second cover blew on the same block.

Con Edison said the manholes had voltage issues, which caused the explosions.

One cover hit the bottom of a car. One person in the car was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Con Edison said weather appeared to be a factor.

Members of the NYPD, FDNY and Con Ed all responded.

Traffic in the area was shut down for some time.
