Long Island's 'National Anthem Girl' About To Complete 50-State Journey

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island woman is about to sing herself into the record books.

Janine Stange has performed the national anthem in 48 states and is on track to reach 50 before the 200th anniversary of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is celebrated Sept. 14.

Known as "The National Anthem Girl," Stange told CBS 2 singing is the easiest part; it's the scheduling that's the real challenge.

"A lot of phone calls. A lot of looking online to see this city in this state is pretty close to this one, so this could work if I flew in and drove to the other state," Stange said. "It's a lot of logistics."

Stange also runs a nonprofit group and sets up a table after each performance so people can write thank-you cards to deployed U.S. troops, which are then included in care packages sent overseas.

The last two states Stange will check off her list are Hawaii (Friday) and Tennessee (Aug. 28). She began her journey in 2012.
