Union Leader: LI School Bus Workers Will Not Strike Monday Morning

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - After employees of a Long Island school bus company voted Saturday to authorize a strike, officials have announced employees will not be walking to the picket lines Monday morning.

"Based on a conversation I had this evening with Baumann's attorney, Glenn Smith, there is some reason to believe there may be the ability for the parties to find some common ground," Timothy Lynch, president of Teamsters Local 1205, said. "Therefore, the union will not be striking tomorrow morning."

Employees at Baumann & Sons Buses and Acme Buses voted by secret ballot to authorize the strike, rejecting the companies' "last, best and final offer," according to a news release from Teamsters Local 1205 of Farmingdale.

A Newsday report said the union had been demanding more pay, greater company contributions to health care, and improved working conditions.

There will be further discussion at some point during the day on Monday, Lynch said.

Baumann & Sons is one of the largest school bus operators on Long Island, transporting some 15,000 students a day.
