Talks Continue To Avert Long Island School Bus Drivers Strike

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Talks resumed Monday in an attempt to head off a school bus drivers strike on Long Island.

About 1,200 drivers and Ronkonkoma-based Baumann & Sons, one of Long Island's largest school bus operators, are locked in a dispute over wages.

Teamsters Local 1205 President Timothy Lynch said every effort will be made to avert a strike.

"We don't want to do anything that would be seen by anyone in the community as not determined to see this through at the bargaining table," Lynch said. "We are determined to see this through, we will fight as hard as we can to get the workers who work for this company the dignified wages and safe working conditions and fair medical plan that they deserve."

As the mediation continues, Lynch said the drivers will negotiate around the clock if necessary, but he adds, "We will be on the street if Baumann & Company does not bargain in good faith with us."
