Pit Bull Found Near Death On Long Island Now Looking For Loving Home

CALVERTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The search is on for a family worthy of a very special pet in need of a very special home.

Bella, a 4-year-old female pit bull, is completely recovered from severe neck wounds received in an abusive home.

The Suffolk County SPCA said Bella was near death and starving when she was rescued from the house in Mastic. Bella's collar was embedded so deeply in her neck that it struck a jugular vein.

"It actually looked like somebody took a machete to this dog," Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said. "It was horrible."

Now, Bella is ready for adoption, but only to a home that fits her loving personality, said Kent Animal Shelter Director Pam Green.

"She is super sweet, she loves people, she is great with other dogs," Green said. "This dog is a fantastic dog."

Bella is not a big fan of cats, but does love kids, Green said.

Bella's previous owner is charged with animal cruelty.
