Long Island Police Rescue Two Men From Chilly Smithtown Bay

NEW YORK (AP) -- Police on Long Island rescued two men from the chilly waters of Smithtown Bay after their canoe overturned.

Police say witnesses at Kings Park Bluff at Old Dock Road alerted authorities after they saw the canoe capsize at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

A Suffolk County police officer and a Smithtown Public Safety Bay constable located one of the victims north of the pavilion at Sunken Meadows State Park. The 22-year-old man from Nesconset had been in the water about 20 minutes.

The second victim, a 25-year-old male from Hauppauge, was found with the help of aviation officers. He had been in the water about 45 minutes.

Both men were hospitalized in critical but stable condition suffering from hypothermia, cuts and abrasions.
