Long Island Woman, 62, Dies While Shoveling During Storm

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Parts of Long Island were digging out Thursday from a foot of snow or more after a fourth nor'easter slammed the area.

In at least one case, the effort turned fatal.

A 62-year-old woman collapsed of a heart attack and died while shoveling snow in Nassau County. She was found dead late Wednesday night in front of her Cross Road home in Bellmore.

In Nassau County, Old Bethpage received over 14 inches of snow while Glen Cove saw 11.5 inches. Other spots had between 4 and 10 inches of snow.

In Suffolk County, the National Weather Service reports that 19 inches of snow fell in Bay Shore and Patchogue while 14 inches of snow fell in Islip. Other areas saw more than 12 inches.

"We were seeing one, two, three inches of snow in the predawn hours," Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquardo told CBS2's Jennifer McLogan. "Extremely challenging."

The nor'easter left behind downed trees, roads packed with snow and accidents.

"Rough. Tough. I didn't expect this," one man told Burrell.

"Oh yeah, we're sliding around all over the road," said Zach Masrour of Bay Shore. "Especially earlier this morning, before the plows really had a chance to get out there. It was dangerous conditions. I saw ten cars stuck on the side of the road, just on my block."

Mobile 2 made its way through some of the worst side streets in Bay Shore that were still waiting for a plow. Burrell spotted multiple cars stuck attempting to drive through the thick slush earlier in the day.

"Pretty awful, the roads. Another surprising storm," Masrour said.

While crews were out salting and sanding, a lot of homeowners were out working too.

"Heavy, thick snow, so it's hard to plow. Trying to get it through so I can get to Mexico for a wedding," said resident Rick Ramsey. His flight was canceled in the morning so he was clearing out his driveway before trying again to fly out later Thursday.

While the densely-packed snow is hard to move, it's just the kind his dog Holly loves.

"She loves the snow, she loves to run through it and get all snowy with snowballs underneath her," Ramsey said.

"Everybody enjoy it and hope it's the last. Hopefully I don't have to see you guys around here anymore," one man told Burrell.

About 2,717 PSEG customers were also without power early Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Long Island Rail Road was running normal service Thursday, but said delays were possible.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo had declared a state of emergency for all of downstate New York, including Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The storm was blamed for at least one other death Wednesday morning on the Long Island. A 51-year-old woman was killed and five others were injured when a van flipped over on the Wantagh Parkway just south of Hempstead Turnpike Wednesday morning.
