Long Island Man Charged With Animal Cruelty
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man has been slapped with animal cruelty charges for allegedly leaving his dogs outside in deplorable conditions.
According to Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA, Harry Tommy Patrick, of Central Islip, was arrested and charged with eight counts of animal cruelty.
Patrick is accused of keeping seven pit bulls and one puppy outside in at least 1 inch of their own feces and urine. Some of the dogs were on chains, the SPCA said.
SPCA investigators and Islip Animal Control workers who removed the dogs from the home on Atlantic Street were covered in dog feces from handling the dogs, Gross said.
Three of the dogs were taken to the Veterinary Medical Center in West Islip. The rest were taken to the Islip Animal Shelter.
Several dogs were found to be suffering from Lyme disease, severe ear infections and anemia, the SPCA said. Some of the dogs had open sores on their feet and pads, which were covered with feces.
One SPCA investigator described the dog's area as smelling like a cesspool.
The dogs are now at the Town of Islip Animal Shelter and are ready for adoption.
