Police On Long Island On The Lookout For Post-Election Hate Or Bias Incidents
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Post-Election-Day hate symbols and the distribution of bias literature have police on Long Island paying close attention.
KKK flyers were discovered on vehicles in Patchogue this week, and a swastika was found in the boys' bathroom of a Port Washington high school on Thursday.
It has some wondering whether presidential campaign rhetoric is feeding the bias incidents.
But Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini said there is no evidence to support that, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.
"There's been no statistical uptick since the election, and there are no incidents of hate speech that seem directly related to the election of President-elect Donald Trump," he said.
The commissioner said police are monitoring social media and following all leads.
"If there are any crimes committed, we will get to the bottom of it and do everything in our power to hold those accountable," Sini said.
