Hundreds Of Families Tackle Long Island Corn Maze

BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Hundreds of families on Long Island's East End spent the day purposely getting lost.

CBS2's Brian Conybeare reports families lined up to take on the giant corn maze at the Fairview Farm in Bridgehampton. The maze is cut in the shape of a swan for the nearby Swan Creek.

"It's eight acres, about a quarter-million corn in here," said Harry Ludlow of the Fairview Farm Corn Maze. "It's 12-feet high. I can't see out."

Ludlow's family has run the corn maze for 16 years. They change its design every year, successfully confounding veterans who made their way through in the past.

"It's amazing we can't go out," said Bari Gershlak. "We've been wandering around for like two hours."

A couple of young explorers relied on teamwork to find the exit.

"I think we're a bit lost," the girl said.

The boy replied, "We just started actually."

She responded, "We know how to get back. We have to stick together."

To make sure no one gets lost in the maze overnight, everyone is given a clue sheet. When they come to a numbered post and if they answer the trivia question right, it tells you which way to turn.

One couple had their own unique strategy.

"When we go to the left, we make every left, and when we go to the right, we make every right turn, but it sure does take you the long way," said Benjamin Weeks.

Weeks' girlfriend said getting through the maze is like the search for true love that can first take you down the wrong trail.

"And then you find the right trail and it's all good," said Nancy Axelrod.

The corn maze will be open on weekends until mid-November.
