Long Island Congressman Pushes For Boater Safety Law

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island congressman wants a federal law to make boating safer in response to the boating tragedy in July, 2012 that claimed the lives of three children.

Lisa Gaines looks out at the water in Huntington Bay, Long Island and all she can think about is the loss of her 7-year-old daughter Victoria.

Victoria died on July 4, 2012 along with two other children when their boat capsized, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"I look out at those waters and the water is beautiful here, yet its painful for me," Gaines said.

She supports Rep. Steve Israel's legislation to require all manufacturers to display the maximum amount of people allowed on boats that are 45-feet-long or shorter.

He also wants to provide grants for boating safety classes.

"And its something that's so necessary. I mean, this is a motor vehicle for all intents and purposes, on a very unstable environment. There's no brakes, there's no roads, there's no lights," Gaines added.
