Little Italy Museum, Elderly Tenant Reach Eviction Agreement

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - An 85-year-old resident who faced eviction from her apartment in Manhattan's Little Italy has until June 30 to leave under an agreement reached with her landlord, the Italian American Museum.

Adele Sarno has lived in the same two-bedroom over the museum for over 50 years.

She went to Housing Court last month to try to stop the eviction after losing a five-year fight to stay in the $820-a-month apartment.

Her plight drew protests from housing advocates.

Sarno told The New York Times that the agreement was reached Monday. It gives her time to find a smaller place in Little Italy.

When Sarno moved into the apartment, her rent was only $150. She now pays $820 to the Italian-American Museum below.

The museum has said it was looking to expand its space. It declined to comment on the settlement.
