Lifeguards On High Alert Over The Weekend As Storm Prompts Rip Current Concerns

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Lifeguards at area beaches were on high alert over the weekend as the danger of rip currents increased along the south shore of Long Island.

The after-effects of Hurricane Arthur prompted several towns to use more beach patrol staff to warn swimmers of the risks of rip currents.

"As long as you're relaxed and you're floating you're going to be living. The rip current doesn't last forever, it starts to dissipate," beach supervisor, John Skudin said.

More than a dozen Long Island beaches were closed to swimming to do concerns about bacteria levels caused by heavy rains that generate storm water runoff. Most of those beaches have reopened.
