LI Lawmaker Proposes Bill To Halt Gaming Facilities In Nassau, Suffolk Counties
WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - After the Westbury community came together and fought the plan to bring a casino to their neighborhood, a lawmaker has proposed a bill that would halt gaming facilities in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick said his plan to stop gaming facilities from being built on Long Island is gaining support.
"Because there is no community that is going to welcome one of these. Two of the largest towns on Long Island, Brookhaven and Hempstead, have said we don't want it here, and I don't think any other town would pass a resolution saying we'd be happy to have it here," he told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.
Nassau OTB backed off the plans for the casino after it was in court for a lawsuit brought by the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Westbury.
Some union workers oppose Fitpatrick's idea, but the assemblyman said he would rather see them build a manufacturing facility or housing unit than a casino on Long Island.
