SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The long-expected merger of two Long Island hospitals appears imminent.

As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital have signed a letter of intent to merge and build a new medical center at the university's Southampton campus.

Residents applauded the news.

"It's a much-needed facility out here. As we grow, we need more services," a Southampton resident said.

"I think it's always a good combination when you connect an education facility with a hospital. I think you have the best of both worlds," another man said.

Hamptons residents have long complained about lack of medical services, especially during the summer season when the population more than triples.

An official announcement on the merger and the new medical center could come as early as May.
