CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island dentist is facing charges for allegedly conspiring to distribute prescription painkillers for his wife and two of her friends.

John Gordon was arraigned Tuesday in federal court in Central Islip. Gordon's wife, Carla, was also charged with illegal distribution of painkillers.

Court papers allege Gordon, whose practice is located in Islip Terrace, wrote more than 1,500 prescriptions between 2012 and 2014, Newsday reported.

Both Gordon and his wife were released on $50,000 bond each.
